No Promise of Spring

No Promise of Spring

Bernard Gieske

In marriage there is only one you
–– and many seasons.

No matter the outer changes,
it’s getting to know you
–– the you of each other.

The faces we wear today
fade away --

springs and summers come and go.

In the fall we’ll shed our leaves,
delve deeper deeper
in the dark dark winter,

until we find
the true you of our love,
without the promise of spring.
