Leaving Eden

Leaving Eden

Nicholas Yancy

Now I believe,
now all the fear and trembling is done
that I’m no Adam, you no Eve
and here no God we both can understand;

that despite what they’ll say,
I’m not ashamed of what we did −
two little beasts, back in ancient times, we
were hungry then, are hungry now,

so I’ve brought a bit of bread,
an apple, or two, and the water
here is clean, so
maybe you might sit and share a meal with me

under the trees, we can remark
how beautiful the leaves look, strewn
like all our sins upon each other’s skin
and brush them away so carelessly.
