The End of the Beginning

The End of the Beginning

Laala Kashef Algahta

Darkness licks at my heels
and I surrender,
waving the black flag
of my home, my body,
letting the depression laze
around my person
like a shimmer of mistakes.

Memory works wonders
that we despise,
knitting nightmares
into the very fabric
of our hearts.

With each end a new beginning,
so, then, one must come;
waving its white flag cheerily,
running along the shore.
